Vintage is In!

by jenna 6. August 2010 04:16

Bel Canto Designs is a jewelry company that caters to the new vintage chic look that is so popular in weddings today. Their specialty is acquiring vintage jewelry pieces from the 1940's through 1960's and fashioning them into hair combs, necklaces, earrings and bracelets for brides and their wedding parties. Almost every piece is a one-of-a-kind item, but they also have some "vintage-inspired" lines which are made with new materials - these can be great for matching bridesmaid sets. Bel Canto's owner, Mari Palmer, has an eye for collecting stand-out pieces - whether it is a broach that she turns into a headpiece, or a few gems that she molds together to create one necklace. She also is happy to design new jewelry out of personal or family pieces that you bring to her.

Below are some images from a Bel Canto photoshoot to give you a preview of some of the beautiful work they do. Visit their Website to see more jewelry! http://www.belcantodesigns.com/

Your True Colors

by jenna 31. May 2010 04:39

One of the most challenging elements of wedding planning is picking colors- at least for me! Its so hard to make that commitment, because as we all know, those 2, 3, or even 4 colors you select can make a huge impact on the mood of your big day.

In an effort to stay on top of the wedding trends, Donna and I hit up as many wedding events and seminars as we can fit in. Two of these recent events that I've attended have included presentations by award-winning and nationally-acclaimed wedding/event planners, and of COURSE they both touched on the topic of colors!

At the April NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) event, the guest speaker was CEO and Managing Director of The Special Event Company, Sally Webb. She said that the hottest new color combination that she's seeing right now is yellow, combined with any shade of blue. Yellow is a fabulous choice for any season- it is perfect for the main color during spring or summer events, with navy, royal, aqua or carolina blue as Sally suggested, but also with the blooming colors of these seasons such as corals & greens. And in the fall it works well with deeper oranges or browns. Even in winter it could serve as an accent color with blue, black or white.

Last week I attended Forever Bridal's event featuring The Wedding Guys - Matthew Trettel and Bruce Vassar - who are Minneapolis-based wedding industry visionaries and trend-spotting specialists who put on fashion shows and plan major weddings.  These two spoke about the concept of color palates versus the older tradition of one theme color. Now we are seeing brides pick palates of 3-4 colors, which is a more challenging thing to accomplish, but can bring more life and personality into the event. Matt and Bruce examine the colors that appear on the runway to predict what will be hot in approximately 18 months in weddings. They say that the upcoming year's hot colors will be muted tones, pastels, blushes, and even teal. (And for men's suits, charcoal gray- which makes me happy because that is what I had envisioned putting MY groom in next April :)

Now what's interesting is that while the planners had different ideas about what the current "hot colors" are, the message is clear- your colors can be whatever you want!  The hot colors come and go in an ongoing cycle, so pick anything that makes you happy and feels like it is YOU. If you need help, talk to your wedding planner- give her one favorite color and let her help you select the accents. Or refer to magazines and websites for combinations that appeal to you. Last year's color combos will still be cool next year- if it looks good, it looks good!

Romantic Ride

by jenna 1. April 2010 07:22

The newlyweds’ first ride as husband and wife should be celebratory, memorable and out of the ordinary. This special ride usually takes place as the couple arrives at the reception, or leaves the reception together after the reception is over. Either way, it is a monumental, yet fleeting moment, when the couple is out of the public eye for the first time all day and can relish in the excitement that the knot is officially tied!

Johnny Smith, of Gold Leaf Carriage, has provided this moment for brides & grooms on the East Coast for over 20 years, and he has definitely achieved “pro” status. His white, patent-leather carriage is pulled by two stunning black Percheron draft horses. Johnny (the driver) and his footman are decked out in authentic coachmen attire- top hat, gloves and coat-tailed jackets. The carriage even has an optional top, to ensure that your ride is perfectly romantic, even the weather is less than so.  http://www.goldleafcarriage.com

Unity Candle & Unity Sand Ceremonies

by Denise 28. May 2009 08:38

Wedding ceremony “trends” today are often a blend of old and new traditions, with unique touches that reflect the individual personalities of the bride and groom as well as paying homage to their respective heritages.  One of the most popular additions to the wedding ceremony today is the lighting of a single candle to symbolize a couple’s unity. A bride and groom may each have their own candle and light the single one together, or in some cases family members may be included. While the lighting may take place at any time during the ceremony, it usually occurs following the exchange of vows. Depending on the location of the ceremony, the unity candle could be decorated with flowers.

In place of lighting a candle, some couples are choosing to pour two different-colored sands into one vessel, also to symbolize a couple’s unity. Two advantages here are that the sand colors can be selected to coordinate with the wedding color scheme, and if the wedding takes place outdoors - particularly on a beach - there is no worry about wind blowing out the candles.

Add "A Southern Touch" to your wedding

by Denise 1. May 2009 07:27

Just the phrase "Southern Wedding" conjures up images of hospitality, charm, abundance, and making guests feel special. Our SB&G website has many useful articles, but one that we think couples are interested in -- across the country! -- is the one about how to add a Southern feel to your wedding, regardless of where it takes place. One of the favorite old-fashioned traditions is that of changing into "going away outfits" before leaving the reception, ostensibly embarking on the Honeymoon. Now, while many couples today choose to remain in their wedding attire the entire time, some still enjoy the "going away" change, as in the photo below from a wedding at The Matthews House, provided by Katie Hamister Photography

Are Wedding Gowns Going "Mini"?

by donna 30. March 2009 06:16

We love the kicky short gowns and even picked one from our floral photo shoot for the current Southern Bride & Groom Spring cover. Many of the designers are showing one or two shorter gowns in their new collections and they can be perfect for a destination wedding, a fabulous beach wedding, a semi-formal daytime garden wedding affair, or any encore wedding. Besides, most of these dresses can easily be worn again to a cocktail affair.

  • Dress with ruffled sheer front and ribbon tie is by Angel Sanchez, available at Tre Bella Bridal.
  • Babydoll style Vera Wang is available at Alexia’s; cover photo by Marthanna Yater.
  • The dancing bride actually wore an original Anne Barge bridal gown and changed to the short bridal dress for her after-reception-party; photo by Marthanna Yater.

Many brides with the budget are choosing a formal ceremony bridal gown, and a fabulous shorter bridal dress for the reception or after-reception party. Some girls have all the luck!
